Католики Сент-Кристофера и Монтсеррата и вопрос об их изгнании из колонии Виргиния в 1620–1640-е гг.

Аннотация

Целью статьи является определение степени обоснованности устоявшегося в историографии тезиса о религиозном характере изгнания ирландских католиков из колонии Виргиния, впоследствии основавших поселение на острове Монтсеррат в 1632 г. В работе предпринята попытка критического анализа свидетельств отца Эндрю Уайта и губернатора Леонарда Калверта 1634 г. на основе комплекса документальных источников, таких как хартии Виргинии, протоколы Совета колонии, патенты на перевозку, переписка иезуитов. Научная новизна состоит в том, что впервые в российской историографии доказано отсутствие документальных подтверждений формального акта изгнания. Религиозная дискриминация в отношении католиков в Виргинии носила системный характер и была закреплена в хартиях, требовавших принесения присяги о верховенстве, что делало невозможным получение ими статуса свободных поселенцев. В статье показано, что ирландские католики, присутствовавшие в колонии с 1620-х гг. на положении контрактных слуг и ремесленников, не подвергались депортации. Их переселение на Сент-Кристофер и Монтсеррат интерпретируется как осознанный выбор в пользу юрисдикций, совместимых с их религиозной идентичностью. Результаты исследования вносят коррективы в историографию ранней колониальной Америки, предлагая более нюансированную трактовку механизмов религиозного исключения, отличную от упрощенного «тезиса об изгнании».
