Массовые антикатолические выступления в 1688 году: революционные эксцессы или борьба с контрреволюцией в Англии?

Аннотация

Цель статьи - проследить истоки народных антикатолических выступлений Славной революции 1688-1689 гг. и ответить на вопрос, являлись ли они борьбой с контрреволюцией или лишь революционными эксцессами. На основе англоязычной историографии и аутентичных источников автор исследует суть Славной революции, генезис и проявления антикатолицизма в Англии, роль Вильгельма Оранского как защитника протестантизма. Научная новизна исследования заключается в рассмотрении религиозной борьбы протестантов и католиков с точки зрения ее значимости для баланса сил революции и контрреволюции. В результате выявляется, что хотя организационно антикатолические выступления 1688 г. можно считать эксцессами, реакцией накачанных религиозной пропагандой масс населения, в плане времени, места и целей эти выступления стали важной частью борьбы с потенциальной контрреволюцией, формой защиты идей протестантизма как доминировавшей идеологии Славной революции.
