THE GREAT POWERS’ INTERVENTION INTO THE POLISH REBELLION OF 1863 AND RUSSIA’S POSITION

Abstract

The article is devoted to analysing one of the key events of Russia’s foreign policy and Europe’s political life of the middle of the XIX century - the great powers’ intervention into the anti-Russian rebellion of 1863 in the Kingdom of Poland. The author analyses in detail the preparation, process and consequences of the intervention of Great Britain, France and Austria in this conflict and the tsarist government’s response. Using exclusively diplomatic methods Russia defended its national interests and won a victory. A direct consequence of the Polish crisis was the regrouping of the great powers, which greatly influenced the subsequent history of Europe and the world.
