THE CELTS AND ROME: FORMATION AND FUNCTIONING OF CAESAR’S FIRST CELTIC LEGIONS

Abstract

The article summarizes the materials on the history of the Gaulish legions of the Roman army during Caesar’s reign and describes their role in Romanization of peregrini through their immediate inclusion into military structures and, consequently, into socio-political relations of the Roman Empire. The author examines historical events associated with the formation and functionning of Caesar’s first Celtic legions - Legio V Alaudae (skylarks) and Legio XXII Deiotariana . Formation of these military units laid the basis for Romanization of the Celtic population and predetermined the peculiarities of this process.
