ZEN DOCTRINE AND JAPAN’S STATE IDEOLOGY IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE XX CENTURY

Abstract

The paper considers the reinterpretation of the Zen doctrine in the form of New Buddhism represented by Rinzai and Sōtō schools in the context of Japan’s state ideology, which manifested itself in the conception of the Japanese national identity, kokutai . It turns out that Soyen Shaku (Rinzai), Kaiten Nukariya (Sōtō), Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki associated Buddhism with the bushido ethical code, one of the fundamental aspects of the kokutai conception. It is shown that the New Buddhism doctrine in its simplified form constituted the basis for 1941 Senjinkun military code where Zen Masters’ teachings were represented in a distorted form.
