The Great Manchurian Plague of 1910-1911: Epidemic with Chinese Specifics

Abstract

The article aims to study the course and consequences of pneumonic plague epidemic that spread in Manchuria in 1910-1911. Scientific originality of the paper is conditioned by the fact that anti-epidemic policy of the Chinese authorities remains poorly investigated, and also by the fact that historical experience of struggle with epidemics is interpreted through the lens of contemporary vision. The study is based on analysing materials of the Chinese and Russian periodical press, memoir literature, contemporaries’ testimonies. The conducted research allows concluding that the Manchurian epidemic contributed to introducing the western medicine in China and allowed the international community to recognize the necessity of interstate cooperation in prevention and liquidation of epidemic.
