Designer A. S. Yakovlev’s Books as Source on the Soviet History

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to study literary works of A. S. Yakovlev - the famous Soviet aircraft designer, author of several memoirs, including his best known work, “The Aim of Lifetime”. The paper is novel in that it is the first attempt to analyse and critically assess public significance of the said works in the Russian historiography. At the same time, the researcher has articulated his own view on A. S. Yakovlev’s books, noting such shortcomings as excessive ideologisation and a certain bias on the author’s part regarding assessment of the Soviet aircraft industry achievements. As a result, it is concluded that, in general, the outstanding designer’s books are a valuable source for studying history of the Soviet aviation and the Soviet history as a whole.
