The Cavalry’s Participation in the 338 BC Battle of Chaeronea

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the cavalry’s role in the 338 BC Battle of Chaeronea. Due to scarcity of data from surviving sources, there is no clear position in research literature on the cavalry’s participation in this battle. There is even an opinion that the battle was fought “on foot” without involving the cavalry. Scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that despite textbook nature of the topic as a subject of classical studies, this paper undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the currently available data, including anthropological, on the course of this battle. As a result, the authors prove the cavalry’s undoubted participation in the Battle of Chaeronea.
