Formation of the UK Diplomatic Position during Preparation for Negotiations with the Emir of Afghanistan (October-November 1904)

Abstract

The paper analyzes the formation of the UK diplomatic position during preparation for negotiations between Emir of Afghanistan Habibullah Khan and the representative of viceroy of India L. Dan. Politicians’ views are examined in the context of the Anglo-Afghan relations at the beginning of the XX century. The author reveals some little-known facts from the history of political confrontation between Great Britain and Afghanistan, reconstructs the events that preceded the visit of the British diplomatic mission to Kabul in October-November 1904, and herein lies scientific originality of the study. As a result, it is proved that the British foreign policy was aimed to broaden the British military presence in Afghanistan with a view to achieve full control over the country.
