Series of A. Canaletto’s Venetian Capriccio Paintings of the 1740s and Features of Their Spatial Construction

Abstract

The study aims to identify methods used for imaginary space construction in Venetian capriccio paintings made by Antonio Canaletto at the commission of Joseph Smith and Francesco Algarotti. Scientific novelty of the study lies in developing a typology of compositional methods of Canaletto’s capriccio paintings on the basis of a formal analysis, as well as in comparing them with their real-life prototypes in the modern topography of Venice and in the images of the XVIII century. As a result, the researcher has identified four methods of imaginary space transformation and construction that are peculiar to this series and distinct in their emphasis on frontal projections and spatial rather than volumetric-planning characteristics of the urban environment.
