Ordensstaat (order state): interaction between spheres of public life

Abstract

The research aims to identify the specific features of the interaction of spheres of public life in the Ordensstaat (order state), that is, in a political structure based on religious beliefs. The work examines the historical transformations that occurred with Christian Catholic monasticism in the course of its development (from solitary anchorites to the theocracy of spiritual-chivalric orders), as well as the attempt by Sunni Muslims to create a theocratic state in Afghanistan. The scientific novelty lies in a comparative analysis of order states created by medieval Catholic warrior-monks (for example, the Teutonic Order in the 12th-16th centuries) and modern militant Islamists (the regime of Deobandi sectarians in Afghanistan). The research established that the spiritual sphere plays an important role in the life of the Ordensstaat (order state), initially claiming a dominant position in relation to the other spheres, but secularization of politics inevitably occurs in the future. Moreover, while hierarchically structured Christian orders do not officially try to impose their charters on lay people, Muslim radicals inevitably seek to Islamize the entire society.
