The activity of peat enterprises and their importance during the Great Patriotic War (based on the materials of the Vladimir and Ivanovo regions)

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the main activities of peat enterprises located on the territory of the modern Vladimir and Ivanovo regions during the Great Patriotic War. The purpose of the article is to reconstruct peat extraction during the hard times of the war on the basis of two regions that made a significant contribution to the industry throughout the Soviet Union. Based on the sources stored in the party and economic funds in the State Archives of the Vladimir and Ivanovo regions, an attempt has been made to track the main indicators of peat extraction in various ways, identify the dynamics of production and find out the problems in this process. The paper draws attention to the fact that the greatest difficulty in the work of peat enterprises was associated not only with the extraction of minerals, but also with their removal and delivery to the end user. As a result, an important part of the study was the identification of the main problems associated with the activities of narrow-gauge railways through which the peat removal process was carried out. The scientific novelty of the article lies in filling a research gap concerning two major peat-producing regions and introducing new archival documents into scholarly circulation. The study reveals that despite its critical importance to industry, peat extraction faced significant hurdles; production declined in the early stages of the war and, while it gradually increased thereafter, it failed to reach pre-war levels. These difficulties in extraction and logistics were driven by a shortage of labor across various skill levels and the technical under-equipment of the industry. In the post-war years, plans were made to expand peat extraction, as it remained a vital fuel source for the following decades.
