The fantasy genre in the Early Baroque: a case study of the works of J. Sweelinck, J. Pachelbel, and D. Buxtehude

Abstract

The study aims to compare the stylistic features of the “fantasy writing” (fantasio) composition style of Early Baroque composers – namely, J. Sweelinck, J. Pachelbel, and D. Buxtehude. The article also examines the phenomenon of stylus fantasticus (the “fantastic style”), a complex of compositional techniques that defined the specifics of the fantasy genre in the works of the selected composers. The organ and keyboard fantasies of J. Sweelinck and J. Pachelbel, as well as the chorale arrangements of D. Buxtehude, are analyzed; the characteristic features inherent in the fantasy genre during the Early Baroque period are identified. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the synthesis of fragmented information regarding the fantasy genre in the Early Baroque period based on existing literature. As a result of the study, specific features of the fantasies of Early Baroque composers were revealed.
