The concert “Schwanendreher” for viola and orchestra by P. Hindemith in the historical and cultural context of the era

Abstract

The article is devoted to the concert “Der Schwanendreher” for viola and orchestra by Paul Hindemith. The aim of the study is to reveal the figurative content and compositional features of the work, which has become a symbol of the opposition between the freedom of the individual and creative expression and the official ideology, as well as an example of the search for a dialectical unity between the past and the present. Drawing on archival sources and recent publications by German art historians, the article elucidates the semantic concept underlying the title of the Viola Concerto and outlines the circumstances and precise dates of its composition. Particular attention is directed to the Old German folk songs that constitute the foundation of the work’s structure. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the fact that, for the first time in Russian musicology, a corpus of documents is presented, enabling a substantial expansion of knowledge regarding the piece itself and facilitating the determination of its position within the historical and cultural context of the era. The findings of the study indicate that in selecting the song material, Hindemith adhered to a specific dramaturgical approach, which mirrored the adverse personal circumstances confronting the composer in the mid‑1930s. “Schwanendreher”, rooted in national musical folklore, served not only as a form of cultural protest but also as a compelling illustration of the principle that any innovative endeavour must be anchored in folk tradition, and that the traditional song repertoire may be effectively integrated with contemporary means of musical expression.
