Marlborough's Danube march-maneuver and the turning point in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714)

Abstract

The aim of the article is to identify the features of Western European military art during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the article presents a military-professional analysis of an episode of Western European history hitherto unreflected in domestic historiography – the 1704 march-maneuver of the Duke of Marlborough from the Netherlands to the Danube. As a result, it was established that in the course of this campaign, both general and specific aspects of Western European warfare were manifested. Maneuverable positional tendencies gained strength in military strategy, while in troop control, the so-called "cabinet" style of command developed. Limited operational goals, passivity, and indecisiveness in conducting military actions became typical features. At the same time, the high level of organization and execution of the 1704 march-maneuver, comprehensive troop supply, and rear logistics are emphasized. The resounding success of the operation was due to the leadership abilities of the Duke of J. Marlborough, the failure of his opponents, and the stable financial condition of Great Britain and Holland, which manifested in the moral and combat superiority of the Allied army over the enemy.
