Bayan sonatas by Leningrad and St. Petersburg composers: a typology of the genre

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to establish a typology of the bayan sonata genre in the works of Leningrad and St. Petersburg composers. The article examines three types of bayan sonatas. The first and second types are opposed to each other and are associated with two distinct artistic approaches: within the framework of the academic tradition and innovation. The third group of sonatas is united by a type of folkloric intonation – in these works, the composers’ explorations continue along the lines of the stylistic trends of the “New Folklore Wave” of the 1960s-1970s. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time, based on bayan sonatas by Leningrad and St. Petersburg composers, stylistic influences of the 20th-21st centuries are described and structured. As a result of the study, it was established that various interrelationships exist within the types of bayan sonatas. The refraction of folkloric intonations and folklore grammar is possible in music associated with the academic tradition. At the same time, the avant-garde as an artistic movement is based on anti-traditionalism, yet it creates a certain tradition followed by many composers, which demonstrates the conventionality of the general division into groups and the complexity of classification.
