The aesthetics of decadence in Abbé Dubos’s “Critical Reflections...”

Abstract

This article aims to reconstruct elements of decadent discourse based on Jean-Baptiste Dubos’s (1670-1742) “Critical Reflections on Poetry and Painting”. The study’s novelty lies in the identification – for the first time within Abbé Dubos’s classic work – of components of decadent aesthetics, as well as the pathological, anti-normative, and elitist traits associated with artistic genius; this includes the French author’s characterization of the work and personality of Peter Paul Rubens. The approach outlined here fundamentally alters the meaning of existing interpretations of “Critical Reflections…” and early Enlightenment aesthetics. The article analyzes the French author’s most innovative aesthetic features – specifically his interest in the perception of artworks – within the context of the decadent cult of genius and deviant behavioral models. Various components of classical art theory are examined through the prism of concepts of imagination and fantasy. In the context of the emergence of the discourse of decadence, the article addresses aspects of the aesthetics of Classicism, pre-Romantic tendencies, and Enlightenment and natural-scientific discourses. The complex dialectic of the allegorical and the visual in the works of Dubos and Schopenhauer are compared. The study concludes that Dubos’s concept of art anticipates not only theories of “mass culture” but also the concept of art as an expression of the unconscious. Equating artistic perception with “drive” paves the way for a new framing of the role of the spectator – one that is closely aligned with decadent aesthetics.
