Russia of the 20th century through the prism of musical art: the 1970s-1980s – Alfred Schnittke
Abstract
This publication continues a contextual survey of 20th-century Russian music. In this essay, the author turns to Alfred Schnittke’s compositional work of the 1970s and 1980s. This period of the composer’s work is characterized by the search for an individual style: from avant-garde experiments to restraint and balance in the imagery and emotional tone. In his work, A. Schnittke addresses the inner world of the human being and explores the most important questions of existence. Moreover, the works of the period under consideration reveal elements of the sentimental, melodramatic, and expressive, which the composer consciously employs to reveal significant themes most fully. The outstanding works of this stage include the Requiem (1975), the Piano Quintet (1976), Concerto Grosso No. 1 (1977), Violin Concerto No. 3 (1978), the Concerto for Piano and Strings, and the Second Symphony (both scores, 1979). As an heir to and continuer of the traditions of D. Shostakovich, A. Schnittke occupies a significant place not only in Russian but also in world music.
