COGNITIVE METHODOLOGY IN THE MODERN THEORY OF RELIGION

Abstract

The article examines the methodological influence of cognitive science on the study of religion. The cognitive naturalistic approach, designed to give an explanatory conception, has provoked not only interest, but also criticism. Recognizing the shortcomings, today scientists apply the achievements of cognitive science along with the classical approaches of religious studies (historical, culturological, etc.), receiving a qualitatively different result of the research. Analyzing the boundaries of the cognitive approach in the theory of religion, the author outlines the ways to overcome them and possible methodological innovations.
