Artistic Symbols in Architecture of Forbidden City

Abstract

The paper aims to reveal the role of artistic symbols in architecture of Forbidden City. The article provides a brief survey of the Chinese architecture, identifies its peculiar features. Special attention is paid to such peculiarities of Forbidden City as building materials, symmetry of buildings, colour symbolism, symbolic meaning of animal sculptures, window grill design. Scientific originality of the study involves a comprehensive analysis of the Chinese aesthetics and philosophy influence on architecture, which manifests itself through artistic symbols. The research findings are as follows: the author proves that architectural peculiarities of Forbidden City (location of buildings, their colour, ornamentation, window grill design, etc.) represent social stratification of imperial China and the Chinese national worldview.
