Human Dignity Notion: Origins, Meaning and Modern Interpretation

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to provide rationale for defining role of historical sources in formation of modern meaning and significance of the human dignity notion. Despite the fact that there are many interpretations of the dignity notion and that its content has virtually undergone radical transformation, according to the author, essence of modern understanding of dignity still amounts to the meanings and significance that were formulated in the process of philosophical and ethical thought development. The study is novel in that it provides rationale for substantive role of historical sources in formation of modern meaning of the human dignity notion, which is of universal importance, and resolves the problems generated by rapid scientific and technological advancement of the society. As a result, the researcher has come to the conclusion that modern understanding of human dignity, which is considered as a universal value possessing cultural and geographic specificity, includes in its essential content the meanings and significance that have been formulated in the process of historical development of philosophical thought and is a basis of the equal dignity concept.
