The reading practices of a Russian merchant in the second half of the 18th century

Abstract

The aim of the research is to identify and reconstruct the reading practices in the second half of the 18th century. The article examines reading based on the annotations found in manuscript No. 1621 of the Pogodin Collection in the Manuscript Department of the Russian National Library, belonging to Maksim Ivanov, a merchant from Mosalsk. These reader annotations form the basis for analyzing and recreating the reading practices of a provincial merchant in the second half of the 18th century. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that the methodology used has not been previously applied, and the problem of reading itself remains one of the least studied in Russian science. Moreover, the source of the research is the manuscript monument introduced into scientific use by the author of the article. The research has found that annotations were part of Maksim Ivanov’s reading practices, allowing him to return to selected texts, creating his own book navigation, expressing and recording his reactions, assessments, arguments, and conclusions. He also communicated not only with other readers of the book but also with himself.
