The manifestation of patriotic sentiments in child heroes in opera (a case study of Vanya from M. I. Glinka’s “A Life for the Tsar” and Fyodor from M. P. Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov”)

Abstract

This paper explores the manifestation of patriotic sentiments in young heroes in Russian operatic classics. The study analyzes the characters of Vanya from M. I. Glinka’s “A Life for the Tsar” and Fyodor from M. P. Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov”. The aim of the study is to identify the specific features of embodying patriotism in child characters, as well as to determine the role of these characters in the overall dramaturgy of the works. The paper focuses on the analysis of the musical characteristics of Vanya and Fyodor. Particular attention is paid to the context of historical events against which the operatic actions unfold. The study is novel in that it adds scientific knowledge on the manifestation of patriotism by child characters of 19th-century operatic art, on the analysis of the artistic and figurative embodiment by Russian composers of the child’s patriotic position in the context of young heroes’ perception of historical and political processes. The study found that, despite their young age, Vanya and Fyodor demonstrate a conscious understanding of their duty to the Motherland and a willingness to self-sacrifice. The analysis carried out shows that the images of child-patriots perform an important dramatic function in the operas of M. I. Glinka and M. P. Mussorgsky, enhancing the emotional impact of the content of musical and stage works on the listener and bringing the importance of the theme of defending the Fatherland to the level of semantic dominance.
