“The postmodernist challenge” in history: cognitive grounds for methodological failure

Abstract

The aim of the study is to substantiate the thesis of the cognitive inadequacy of postmodernist methodology in historical sciences. The article analyzes the influence of postmodernist epistemology on historiography. Based on a retrospective review of debates in British, French, and American historiography, as well as critical works by A. Ya. Gurevich, L. P. Repina, L. Stone, A. Marwick and others, it is shown that the postmodernist challenge has shifted the cognitive boundaries of historical consciousness: between historical and literary discourse, between fact and fiction, and between verifiable knowledge and ideological construction. The scientific novelty consists in arguing, from the standpoint of cognitive epistemology, that the popularity of postmodernism in historiography produces inevitable cognitive costs, resulting in an inability to ensure the cumulativeness, reproducibility, and collective validity of historical knowledge. The authors conclude that it is necessary to return to procedural rationality and to the criterion of factual error as a fundamental condition of professional historical practice.
