An analysis of representations of the deconstruction of the human image and the anthropological transition in Western culture and art from the second half of the 20th to the early 21st century

Abstract

The study aims to identify the specific features and mechanisms underlying the representation of the anthropological transition in Western culture and art from the second half of the 20th to the early 21st century. Drawing on the philosophical concepts of Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Michel Foucault, and Jean Baudrillard, whose works substantiated the crisis of classical humanism, the article identifies and analyzes three typological channels through which this crisis is conveyed: the visual (cinema and the visual arts), the narrative-interactive (literature and video games), and the corporeal-practical (tattoos, piercings, plastic surgery, fitness, and diets). The scientific novelty of the study lies in its comprehensive interdisciplinary approach, which makes it possible to view art not as a passive illustration of philosophical ideas, but as an active co-creator of the anthropological transition, translating abstract theoretical constructs into the realm of sensuously experienced reality. The study establishes that each type of representation offers a distinct perspective on the crisis: cinema and pop art present it as spectacle and catastrophe; literature and video games as narrative and participatory experience; and mass corporeal practices as everyday life and an existential choice enacted at the level of the flesh. It is demonstrated that, in these representations, human beings lose their ontological stability: the body becomes a project, memory an implantable construct, consciousness an editable code, and identity a dynamic process of continuous reassembly. The article concludes that art and cultural practices do not merely record the anthropological transition but actively participate in producing it, transforming the deconstruction of the classical image of the human being from a philosophical abstraction into an urgent fact of contemporary culture.
