Philosophical foundations of literary local studies: place ontology

Abstract

The aim of the scientific work is to develop a philosophical and methodological foundation for literary local studies as an independent form of humanities knowledge through the conceptualization of its ontological foundations. To achieve this goal, the study provides a systematic analysis of key philosophical paradigms that constitute the subject and methodology of local history: from the ancient concept of “genius loci” and the Aristotelian “topos” through the medieval symbolism of space and educational topography to modern phenomenological (M. Heidegger, G. Bachelard, M. Merleau-Ponty, E. Casey), hermeneutic (H.-G. Gadamer, P. Riker), semiotic (Yu. M. Lotman, B. A. Uspensky), and chronotopic (M. M. Bakhtin) approaches. Special attention is paid to the concept of the chronotope as central to understanding literary‑spatial connections, as well as to the category of “imaginary geography” in its relationship with a specific locus. The argumentation is presented regarding the identification of the central problem of the philosophy of literary local studies – the rootedness of human existence and cultural memory in a specific place. The philosophical analysis focuses on the hermeneutic dialogue with the “spirit of the place” embodied in artistic language. The scientific novelty lies in the introduction and substantiation of the concepts of “metaphysics of the province”, “textual aura of the place”, and “existential cartography” in their philosophical context. As a result, the growing role of literary local studies in the era of globalization and digital virtualization has been established as a practice of resisting the desemiotization of space and asserting the ontological significance of the local. The article is addressed to philosophers, literary scholars, cultural studies experts, and specialists in the field of human geography.
