The symbol of the heart in the New Testament: a philosophical anthropological and hermeneutical analysis

Abstract

The aim of the work is to investigate the interrelation between the metaphysical and anthropological symbol of the heart (καρδία) and to trace its reception and development in Russian religious philosophy (the metaphysics of the heart, cardiognosis). Based on the New Testament (Synodal Translation), the works of the Church Fathers (St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory Palamas) and Russian thinkers (St. Nil Sorsky, I. V. Kireevsky, P. D. Yurkevich, B. P. Vysheslavtsev, P. A. Florensky, S. L. Frank, I. A. Ilyin), it is shown that in the New Testament the heart acts not as a physiological organ, but as the deep center of the personality. The paper distinguishes between symbol, metaphor, and allegory, and provides a semiotic analysis of the semantics and pragmatics of the New Testament symbol of the heart. The scientific novelty consists in substantiating the following claims: 1) the New Testament symbol of the heart sets an ontological framework for understanding the “inner man” as an integral subject of moral choice, which has not been undertaken before in Russian religious philosophy; 2) the concept of “heart knowing” (καρδιογνώστης) and the experience of the burning heart (Luke 24:32) form the existential foundation for the subsequent Russian metaphysics of the heart, allowing for a novel reinterpretation of the connection between Old Testament anthropology and cardiognosis. As a result, it is established that the New Testament symbol of the heart anticipates the concept of “integral knowledge” and forms the ontological and epistemological foundation of metaphysics, and also has heuristic potential for modern philosophical anthropology.
