Russia of the 20th century through the prism of musical art: the 1960s-1970s – Rodion Shchedrin
Abstract
This publication continues the contextual overview of 20th-century Russian musical art. In this essay, the author turns to the compositional oeuvre of Rodion Shchedrin in the 1960s and 1970s. Special attention is paid to the evolution of the composer’s style and aesthetic principles, which was vividly manifested in his works of this period, such as the opera “Not Love Alone”. The thematic scope of Shchedrin’s work is remarkably diverse, drawing on classical literature, contemporary poetry, and the history of the 20th century. The romantic character of the composer’s works is highlighted. Furthermore, ballets occupy a prominent place in Shchedrin’s creative output; the essay examines in detail such ballets as “The Carmen Suite” and “Anna Karenina”. It also analyzes the ballet “The Seagull”, which reflects certain artistic features developed in Shchedrin’s “Anna Karenina”.
